to the public, as part of the November General Meeting of the Victoria Division
of the GSA, Inc.
The lecture will commence at 6.15 pm, on Thursday 29th November 2007, in the School of Earth Sciences, at The University of Melbourne, corner of Swanston and Elgin streets, Carlton.

A Bird’s Eye View of the Victorian
Goldfields,
from the First Rushes to the First World
War.
The Keynote Address will cover such themes as:

Patterns in gold discovery.
The magnetism of gold for overseas
immigrants.
How the early goldfields were operated.
A word about Eureka.
Two prophets urgently probe beneath the
ground.
The rise of the company mines and stock
exchanges.
When golden Victoria dominated the nation.
The long decline of gold output followed by
revival in the 1890s.
The king cities – Ballarat and Bendigo – and
their hallmarks.
The influence of Victorian gold on other
mining fields.
Did gold and its importance give Victoria
distinctive social and political characteristics for several generations?
