History of the geology department Project (H.gd.P)
Recent work
carried out in the last two year includes archival work on two former
Professors of the Geology Department - Professor Herbert St John Summers
(1876-1963) and Professor Edwin Sherbon Hills (1906-1986).
Artefacts and
photographs relating to Herbert Summers’ time as Professor of Geology at the
University of Melbourne were donated to the departmental archives by his nephew
Paul Mason.
In 2008, E. S.
Hills’ former home in Kew was sold and a number of geologically-related items
were donated to the departmental archives. In addition, an extensive collection of reprints was offered
to the university. These included
reprints of his own papers as well as many papers related to his research,
written by other scientists. These have been housed for the time being outside
the University.
Historical
material relating to John Walter Gregory’s time as Professor of Geology at the
University of Melbourne from 1899 to 1904 was sent by Doug McCann to Professor
Bernard Leake of Glasgow University who is writing Gregory’s biography.
On 28th September
2008 at Brighton Cemetery a ceremony took place to mark the restoration of
Frederick McCoy’s gravesite. It
was organised by the Brighton Cemetorians and a talk on McCoy’s life and
achievements was delivered by Doug McCann.
